
Scientific name: Tringa (a waterbird), nebularia (as in nebulous or misty with its speckled and streaked plumage)
As its scientific name suggests, the Greenshank has a streaked plumage which gives an overall grey appearance, and isin the same family as Redshank and Green Sandpiper. It is an elegant, medium-sized, long-legged wader with a long,slightly upturned beak. Single birds are usually seen, and it was unusual to have a record of four birds at La Claire Mare at the end of April, 2021.
Local Habitat: marais – Vale Pond, La Claire Mare, undisturbed areas along the West coast.
Diet: invertebrates and small fish.
Distribution: Breeding – northern Europe, over-wintering – southern Europe. Guernsey – passage migrant.
Guernsey migration dates: mid-April – mid-May, early/mid- June – late October.
