Miller

The Millar, Acronita leporina is a member of the Daggers family. It is a smart, pale grey moth with a scattering of darker scales and black markings. Its ground colour can vary across its range from white to dark grey. It is on the wing from late May through to early August, so the one in the top photo, taken on 28 August, was very late in the season. It was very accommodating so I was able to place it in a natural setting where it remained for several hours. It is resident and widespread in Guernsey, although not frequent. Over two years of mothing, I have had three in the garden.

GB Status: Common

Food Plant: Larvae feed on birch and other deciduous trees including Grey Willow

Habitat: Mainly woodland, the pupae overwinter in rotten wood. I have a wood pile at the top of the garden so I may see more individuals in the future.

Since 2000 it has been recorded in 3 10km squares in Guernsey. It is also recorded in Alderney.
