Yellow Vetch

A native plant, Yellow Vetch, Vicia lutes, was recorded by Marquand as rare and located mainly in shingle washed up at L’Erée. It is an unassuming plant as the flowers are more cream coloured sometimes with faint purple veins. It is easily overlooked as it is a low growing scrambler, using tendrils to cling to more vigorous plants. It is now recorded as occasional, but only in Guernsey.

Shingle is no longer washed up at L’Erée as there is a sea wall and concrete at the top of the beach. Yellow Vetch can still be found a little further north on the other side of Lihou Headland on the Shingle Bank, particularly at the end nearest Fort Saumarez.

I found a couple plants at L’Ancresse East, in May 2017, to the right of the road leading up to the car park.
